According to the international rules of the “road”, all seafaring vessels are supposed to maintain “moderate speed” in thick weather, but this rule is variously interpreted and often disregarded. During the long sleep that follows, her body will feed from the layer of fat, which she has stored. Beavers and muskrats don’t know when it snows and they don’t care either. Down in their snug lodges and submarine channels, they live and eat undisturbed by the weather.

So I compromised, by buying a jeweler’s magnifying glass, which is death on the eyes, and a quart preserve jar. I was soon seen by the interested populace of Mexico City squatting, at all hours, over open sewers, slowly lowering my bottle, with a string tied around its neck, into the slime.
